Weekly Warm Hug: Fossils, Friendship and Full-Circle Magic

At Disney’s Port Orleans Resort — French Quarter, there’s something special in the background that Guests don’t always notice right away: a collection of rocks, each with its own story. One of those stories belongs to Shelly, a bartender at Mardi Grog’s, and Tyler, a Resort Front Desk Service Advisor who used to visit as a little kid long before he ever wore a nametag. 

How did the rock collection begin? 

Shelly: “Years ago, a family was sitting at the bar and as we were chatting, a big gust of wind blew the bar napkins everywhere and their receipt flew away. That night, while walking around the resort, they got the idea to take a rock, write their names and hometown on it, and then give it to me to weigh people’s receipts down. It just kind of snowballed from there!” 

How many rocks do you think you’ve been given over the years? 

Shelly: “Too many to count, but never enough! Once Guests saw the first rock, everyone wanted to add their own. Some people paint Disney characters or find rocks that represent where in the world they are from. Guests have even mailed rocks to the resort!” 

Can you tell us about the fossil you brought?

Tyler: “My dad and I collect fossils, so when we saw Shelly’s collection during a visit, we had to join in. Back home in Pennsylvania, we found the perfect fossil, and I saved it for months to bring back to her at Mardi Grog’s during our next trip to Walt Disney World.”  

Shelly: “Tyler and his dad visited often and always stopped by to chat. I used to tell them that Tyler should come work here at Walt Disney World someday.”   

Tyler, did your connection with Shelly play a part in why you ended up here? 

Tyler: “Absolutely. Shelly was more than a Cast Member; she felt like a friend. She always remembered us, and that connection made Disney feel magical. She inspired me to apply, and I even asked to work specifically at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort — French Quarter because of her. 

When she saw me in costume for the first time, she said, ‘Tyler! You’re all grown up! I still have your fossil.’ That moment captured the Disney Difference for me: being remembered, feeling welcomed. You may come here for the parks, but you remember the people.” 

Shelly, how did it feel seeing Tyler come full circle like that? 

Shelly: “When I found out he was working at this very resort, I was floored. One day I saw him walk by and thought, ‘He looks familiar.’ I asked someone his name, and when they said Tyler, it hit me: the little boy who brought me a fossil actually came back and made Disney his home, just like I hoped he would. 

It’s just another reminder of how meaningful this rock tradition has become. They remind me that every small moment plants a seed. You might not see it grow right away, but down the line, it can blossom into something incredible.”
